In this bestseller, Japanese consultant Marie Kondo urges you to systematically purge your possessions and keep only those which “spark joy.”
Kondo has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. And it makes the whole tidying/decluttering/organizing thing sound motivational, not out of reach. It's def worth spending the 10 bucks on Amazon.
In truth, some aspects of Kondo's way of thinking are slightly bizarre and even border on schizophrenia. But if you can see through some of her crazy, you can really start to imagine how decluttering your space will impact your life.
(Just to be clear: I will never get home, take my shoes off, and thank them for their hard work that day. Like, ever. Read the book-you'll know what I mean).
To instigate, I took two days off work to tackle my living space. I spent FOUR ENTIRE DAYS weeding out every closet, cabinet, drawer, shoe box and storage boxes.
It was exhausting. Yet invigorating.
After day four I assessed what I had just achieved. 22 bags of clothing and odds and end were stacked in the corner of my second bedroom.
I had thrown out anything that didn't bring me joy or serve me. And I realized that Kondo's idea to start somewhere and just keep going space by space really helped.
I went back to work on Monday feeling refreshed with more headspace and less of a knot in my stomach. I felt in control and couldn't wait to go home to my clean, uncluttered space.
